About the business

We are spearheading "Positive Motion," a transformative strategic agenda dedicated to decarbonizing our revenue sources and fostering sustainable growth. To support this vision, we are seeking a highly skilled Legal Advisor – Trading to join our legal team in Madrid.

This role provides critical legal and regulatory steering for our global trading operations. You will act as a strategic partner to the business, ensuring seamless compliance across crude oil, refined products, biofuels, natural gas, power, CO2 certificates, and derivatives.

 

The responsibilities we’ll trust you with

  • Strategic Advisory: Provide comprehensive legal and regulatory counsel to the Trading business units, ensuring all activities align with the "Positive Motion" strategy.

  • Contract Management: Draft, review, and negotiate complex trading documentation, including master agreements, tenders, maritime clauses, and general terms and conditions (GT&Cs).

  • Risk Mitigation: Proactively identify and manage legal risks inherent in global trading and new business proposals, offering commercially-minded solutions.

  • Project Leadership: Lead the legal workstreams for internal and external projects that drive the evolution of our Trading business.

  • Dispute Resolution: Manage claims, litigation, and arbitration. You will coordinate with internal stakeholders and external counsel to protect the company’s interests.

  • Regulatory Intelligence: Stay at the forefront of legislative changes, market practices, and case law to ensure the business remains compliant and informed.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with Compliance, Tax, and Finance departments to ensure a unified approach to risk and governance.

  • Asset Support: Supervise port administrative concessions and necessary authorizations for global trading activities in coordination with relevant business units.

 

What are we looking for?

We seek a results-driven professional with sharp interpersonal skills who thrives in the high-pressure, fast-paced environment of energy markets.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Law (LL.M. or specialized postgraduate studies are a plus).

Experience:

  • 5+ years of experience in international contracting, ideally within the energy sector.

  • Proven track record in a trading environment or a top-tier law firm advising trading entities.

  • Deep understanding of energy markets, including financial instruments, derivatives, and hedging strategies.

  • Solid knowledge of Maritime Law and the international regulatory frameworks governing commodities.

  • Familiarity with port regulatory frameworks and administrative procedures.

Languages & competencies:

  • Languages: Full professional proficiency in English and Spanish is mandatory.

  • Communication: Exceptional ability to coordinate across diverse cultures and departments.

  • Agility: A multidisciplinary mindset with the ability to manage complex, simultaneous operations under tight deadlines.
